Just a couple of days before Amanda and her sisters were set to travel down to the Taupō Christmas Classic, she headed out to the arena on Strider, confident he was ready to try his first jump bridleless.

Since her birthday she’d ridden the gelding daily, gradually improving his understanding of the neck rope until he was so consistent she could ride without any halter at all. Once the vet had given his leg the all-clear, she’d been able to add in trotting and cantering bridleless as well, with Strider taking to it like a duck to water.

She’d been tempted to try jumping sooner, but knew the foundations she’d been building were too important to rush. Also, she wanted to make sure she allowed his injury to heal properly.

“I guess this will be the real test, won’t it, boy,” Amanda said, quietly trotting him towards a 40-centimetre cross after she’d warmed him up. She knew there was a big difference between riding bridleless aimlessly around the paddock and actually having enough control to get to a fence. As they rounded the corner to approach the small jump Strider wiggled slightly, and Amanda used both her legs and the neck rope to correct him. A few strides out, he pricked his ears and locked onto the small jump, popping over with little fuss.

Amanda was ecstatic. Picking up a canter, she turned him back towards the fence and this time he stayed perfectly straight and jumped it with ease.

“You are truly incredible,” she said with a grin as she gave him a big pat and brought him back to a walk.
